K-film essay
Overall, I believe my Korsakow Film is very successful and I have certainly learnt an amazing amount along the way. At first, I felt a little frustrated and confused about the subject and especially Korsakow. I couldn’t work out the point or idea of everything we were doing. It just seemed like a waste of time. As time went on, however, and seeing my final product, I can look back and understand and realise what has come out of this experience.
First of all, the video sketches were the most productive thing I believe we have done in this subject. I truly love the idea and I love creating them. It has taught us how to make and publish small scale ‘informal’ media works online. Making these sketches has not only taught me about the interactive media, it has also made me realise how exciting and innovative making 30 second videos every week can be. I never thought that taking out a camera, shooting for 30 seconds and roughly editing movies could be so enjoyable and productive. The idea of just shooting without thinking is a new idea for me and so far, I love it.
I found Korsakow, in general, a little confusing and frustrating. I felt that it is a little out dated and useless compared to the other video tools we have on the internet such as youtube and vimeo. I realise they have slightly different ideas but I still am unable to fully appreciate Korsakow and what it does.
By the time I started playing around with Korsakow it started to become easier and I began to be able to do various things with it that would ultimately contribute to my final K-film. I learnt how to use the keywords which is extremely important because it makes up the story and makes sure everything makes sense. If one doesn’t fully understand how the keywords work, the film would not make sense which would lead to a broken, disjointed film. I learnt that it is very important to choose appropriate keywords and to choose the ins and outs wisely. The first thing I did was draw up a map with pen and paper to make sure everything lead to something and to make sure everything had a match. This adds to the idea of workflow. So before I even started to do all my ins and outs with Korsakow I already had a rough idea of what was leading to what. The four keywords I chose were ‘unexpected’, ‘outside’, ‘symmetry’, and ‘journey’. I believe I chose keywords that really assisted me with what I was trying to achieve. I chose simple words that made sense to my overall theme of ‘Life Goes By’, which is the title of my film. These four keywords, in my eyes, are some of the things that make up life. I made life easier for myself by choosing these words as I could easily navigate my way through the K-film because everything made sense. I believe choosing the correct keywords are the most vital thing in creating a Korsakow film.
I also learnt how to put in text, change the positioning of the text and change the size and font in y K-film. Yet again, this is another vital part of the film and without it would simply confuse and discombobulate the viewer. The text guides the viewer and creates a better understanding of the films themes and ideas. My film is very ambiguous so the text is there to simply give ideas for what the film may be about. The film is a journey and the text explains what may occur and what may come up a long the way. So for example, the very first bit of text the viewer sees when interacting with my film is “Take the Journey…” which inclines the user to go on to the next step and work out what I mean by “journey”. While the film is certainly up to the viewers own interpretation, I offer some guidance a long the way though the text.
All in all, I believe I have been very successful in creating my Korsakow film. I have certainly gotten to grips with all the technicalities of Korsakow in terms of what is required. I use 3 thumbnail panes and all my media files have subtitles. I was able to publish it online via the RMIT student server. The film contains all required media files, all my video sketches. While I initially thought I would have issues with using Korsakow, it turned out I was very successful. The fact that I learnt to make and publish multilinear time based media online shows how successful I was and how I fully understood everything that was required of me.
