Sheilds on Collage
“story seems to say that everything happens for a reason, and I want to say, No, it doesn’t”
not interested in a story knowing where it is going
it’s not where you go to because you don’t know how to write a story
what comes after narrative? a collage is revolutionary. the collage is the model for what comes next
the relationship between the parts that reduces the significance of the work.
bumper sticker for making a korsakow film
“momentum, in literary mosaic, devices not from narrative but from the subtle, progressive buildup of thematic resonances
” i look at melody as rhythm”
“what do you look at? but what do you see?
there is always context, you can never erase context,
part of sheilds criticism is that fictino, storytelling, wants to claim that these contexts aren’t presernt. for sheeilds this is simply being both untruthful (so this is an ethical position)
he writes in a way that of what in korsakow would ne called SNU’s. FRAGMENTS. PIECES. must be intertextual.
COLLAGE (what isn’t collage today? as a media form or a media practice?)
“the main question collage artists face: you’ve found some interesting material- how do you go about rearranging it?”
