Persona #1 Interview

Name: Alex Perkins

Age: 20

About you (developing your persona)

1)   How would you describe your decision-making? EG: What do you do when you make a major purchase (plan/impulse)?

I take into account future use of the product how it would effect my future and what the important people in my life would,

2)   Describe your lifestyle: home/family/interests (these can be fictional if you prefer)

I am a pretty easy going guy, I try to work hard and I always make time for those who matter to me. I have a deep affection for basketball, most sports really. Reading, music, movies, all those usual things

3)   What are your ambitions/aspirations? What motivates you the most: family/community/career?

I want to be a doctor one day and endocrinologist or a neurologist and want a family. I have no idealised figure for how many. One will be called Jedidiah though

Your current communication forms

1)   What dorm of communication do you prefer to have: verbal/written/visual/audio?

a) Why does that form appeal to you or feel natural?

I like to use visual. I assume this includes the audio aspect of it because you can better feel for how a person is feeling or reacting to what you say as text is so easily misinterpreted.

2)   What feels like a good conversation to you: long and ongoing/deep/short and concise?

Whatever the goal of the conversation was is achieved. If you call someone to catch up and do or if you call to organise something and you do no matter how long or deep is a good conversation

3)   How has your conversation/communication changed since the introduction of email/chat/text/twitter/social media?

a)    What has been lost? What has been gained?

I definitely talk to people face to face less which is disappointing but facebook/texting can quite often make you feel like you are involved in someone’s life without any interaction at all. Ease has been gained but personal contact lost.

4)   Imaged the idea future of communication – what does it look like? EG: What proportion of each mode (verbal/written/visual/audio) would be best?

Its a combination between visual and audio where something is implanted in your eye and when you want to make a call you think calling that person and then you can see them in your eye and they can see you, Then this device turns your thought into audio and transmits it to your conversation partner.

a) How can these modes relate to each other? How do they link and support each other?

I see no reason why this can’t work with all other forms of communication.

—-Oedipus—-

>>patriarchy

presence trumps absence>>

being present is greater than being absent. >> writing is secondary to thought and speaking.

in writing, you no longer have to remember things, but you can store them.

>>misunderstanding would come through the way it is communicated (written, spoken)

meaning can only be defined by what it is not.

notion of absence is the foundation of why we have language in the first place. if it can stick to nothing, it is the privileged thing.

Gender division-

present: implicitly male

absence: implicitly female

in terms of physicality – males are highly visible in physical make up, women are not.

From Work To Text. The Reading.

  • The last few years has seen a change in our conception of language
  • Change is due to the development of linguistics, anthropology, Marxism and psychoanalysis
  • Term ‘interdisciplinary’ is a prime value in research
  • The object is the TEXT, apparently a fashionable word
  • the word proposition is understood in a grammatical way than in a logical sense
  • The text is not to be thought of as an object that can be computed
  • the text is a process of demonstration, speaks according to certain rules, or against these rules
  • the text is experienced only in an activity of production
  • the text does not stop as good literature, it is not contained in a hierarchy
  • it maybe said that the text is always paradoxical
  • the text can be approached, experience, in reaction to the sign
  • ‘the infinity of the signifier refers not to some idea of the ineffable (the UN-nameable signified)’
  • the work is moderately symbolic (runs out, comes to a halt)
  • the text is radically symbolic (‘a work conceived, perceived and received in its integrally symbolic nature is a text’)
  • the text is plural
  • accomplishing the very plural of meaning
  • text depends on stereographic plurality
  • the work is caught up in the process of filiation
  • the work is normally the object of consumption: no demagogy is intended here in referring to the so-called consumer culture but it has to be recognized that today is the ‘quality’ of the work
  • a final approach to the text, a pose, a pose of pleasure
  • “text is that social space which leaves no language safe, outside, nor any subject of enunciation in position as judge, master, analyst, confessor, decoder”
  • “the theory of the text can coincide only with a practice of writing”

Korsakow, eeeek!

I unfortunately was sick when we had our first tutorial on Korsakow. Meaning I got left behind. This weeks tute left me very anxious, confused and nervous about the Korsakow program.

However, there seemed to be a lot of people who had attended the previous tute were in the exact same boat as me, and that calmed me down a little. Also the way we were working as a class to overcome the problems we faced really put me in a state of ease.

I managed to put my media on the program and link them to the jpegs and that is about as far as I got in the tute, but it was progress nonetheless.

Composing a FAQ of the program I feel is an excellent idea, because if you have no direction you really do not know what to do at all because the concept of the project is driven greatly by creativity, meaning that there isn’t ONE exact way to carry out your workings with Korsakow. I plan to read the online instructions, tips and tricks and work on it until i feel comfortable and I am not sitting in class wishing someone would give me a hug and tell me it’s going to be okay.

Korsakow Matters.

  1. is authoring software
  2. is currently free for our use
  3. you create media outside of Korsakow and bring in to use
  4. the weekly tasks provide a media library for you to use

Korsakow principles are quite simple.

  1. get your videos together
  2. create a jpeg thumbnail from your video (how?)
  3. import video and thumbnails into Korsakow
  4. save it, give it a real name
  5. you attach ‘keywords’ to your clips,
  6. in keywords are how you ‘define’ the clip
  7. out keywords are what that clip will search for if it is selected
  8. you attach your thumbnail to your clips
  9. keep video and thumbnails in the same place
  10. export the project and see what happens
  11. change theinterface for your project

The Practices Of Everyday Life. First Thoughts

First thoughts

  • La Perruque? Actually a French word with the meaning ‘wig’, but it is used colloquially to describe a diversionary practice of using an employers resources for personal use .
  • “Sly as a fox and twice as quick: there are countless ways of ‘making do’”
  • There is no longer a distinct line between work and leisure, but they rather repeat and reinforce each other
  • Cultural production offers rational operations to be expanded- dividing (analysis), tabulating it (synthesis) and  aggregating it (generalization)
  • The enigma of the consumer sphinx-

—————————– In reality, a rationalized, expansionist, centralized, spectacular and clamorous production by an entirely different kind of production, called ‘consumption’, and characterized by its ruses, its fragmentation (the result of the circumstances)

  • “Popularization” or “Degradation” of a culture is from a point of view a partial and caricatural aspect of revenge that utilizing tactics take on the power that dominates production
  • Semiotics and semiosis
  • Pragmatics: a sub field of linguistics, in the sense that context contributes to the meaning of language.
  • Importantly: considering the context and circumstances of the use of language- Enunciation:

- a realization of the linguistic system through a speech act that actualizes some of its potential (language is real only in the act of speaking)

-an appropriation of language by the speaker who uses it

-the postulation of an interlocutor (real or fictive) and thus the constitution of relational contract or allocution (one speaks to someone)

-the establishment of a present through the act of the “I” who speaks, and conjointly, since “the present is properly the source of time”, the organization of a temporarily (the present creates a before and after) and the existence of a “now” which is the presence to the world”

  •  trajectory: the route that a moving object takes through space as a function of time.

There is a difference between strategies and tactics.

  • Strategies require a subject (an enterprise or city and so on) separated from an environment. They also require a ‘proper’ place [later described as a regularised, rule governed, institutionalised location] from which to generate relations with an exterior (their competitors or clients and so on). Strategies lie behind political and economic rationality.
  • Tactics, on the other hand, have no ‘proper’ localisation, and are not strongly separated from the other. Indeed, they often take place in the territory of the other. They are opportunistic, always on the watch, and involve combining disparate elements to gain a momentary advantage.

  • many studies have looked at the representations of a society on one hand and how it behaves on the other
  • analysis of tv broadcast images (representation) and time spent watching tv (behaviour) should be complemented by studies of what the cultural consumer ‘makes’ or ‘does’ with these images during this time
  • production vs consumption – the latter is devious, silent and invisible
  •  example of Spanish colonizers forcing their culture upon indigenous Indians; they did not reject or alter them but rather subverted them by using them for ends and references that the Spanish could not relate to or understand
  • comparison with consumer culture; the ‘common people’, like the Indians, have a foreign culture imposed upon them by the Elites, but often subvert this culture by using it in ways the producers did not intend
  • the presence and circulation of representations tells us nothing about what they mean to people
  • we must analyse the manipulation of cultural objects by ‘users’ other than its makers
  • difference or similarity between the production of the image and the secondary production hidden in its use
  • performance vs competence; the act of speaking is not the same as having a knowledge of the language
  • language is “an appropriation, or reappropriation, of language by its speakers”
  • users make countless transformations of and within the dominant cultural economy to adapt it to their own interests and their own rules

Weinberger reading questions

What didn’t you understand that you would like to ask about?

This tutorial opened our minds to ideas and concerns that we were faced with in the Weinberger reading this week. We were asked to put forward a series of questions relating to the reading and these are what were produced…

Weinberger notes that social tools help us to find what’s interesting  by using our friends choices as guides. Would this be classified as an opinion or knowledge?

This was discussed at some length, in that we decided that if you were a friend who happened to know about a certain topic/issue etc you would be referring knowledge by suggesting a choice as a guide, but if you weren’t particularly learned in that area of expertise, it was more of an opinion rather than knowledge that you would be passing on.

what is the limitation of the media we use to get past our brains limitations?

This was a question that puzzled the class, although it was based on a direct quote from the reading. It was suggested by Adrian that we can not presume necessarily that there is a specific ‘limit’ to our own brains, which I tend to agree to. And I dont know that media necessarily has a limit at all- not as a whole anyway- for instance a web page can continue for as long as you so wish.

is there a hard line that can be drawn between knowledge and wisdom?

seemingly, we got stuck on actually defining what wisdom is- we knew from the reading the knowledge is actionable information. Wisdom is just up the top somewhere, at the pinnacle, the top of the pyramid- where it is clearly out of reach for the likes of our whole class. (Somehow we came to a discussion of wisdom being porn, I don’t care to delve into it). But Adrian did suggest that we know what wisdom is when we come across it.

what are the true differences between algorithmic and social ways of dealing with information?

We delved into a discussion about the Google algorithm- in the way that pages are ranked when you search. It is based on a number of factors- including the fact that .edu and .gov links tend to come first as they are more likely to not be linked to hyper-link pages created by individuals to boost the rank of their websites in a search engine such as Google.

Lets just say it goes like this….

yeah.

if everyone has access to the same information, what makes an expert?

Outwardly, we all decided that ‘no, we do not all have access to the same information’. Coincidentally, to be considered an expert of something is a matter of perception and we moved on.

how can it be filtering forward if the internet is fragmented  if it can go forward then the step before it is a foundation?

Adrian used a fantastic description of internet searching as being like the dark. You are in the dark with a flashlight and shining it on different sections at any given time. Meaning you are always filtering forward in different sections (thus still holding true to the fragmented nature of the internet).

What do you think of that hey Weinberger?

Girl Talk.

Gregg Michael Mills makes up Girl Talk, and by gosh is he impressive with what he does.

Girl Talk are an example of an artist using other peoples work and mashing it together (but not using more than 7seconds to abide by copyright laws).

Their website, was interesting to look at http://www.myspace.com/girltalk. Although, seriously Girltalk, not even Tom uses Myspace anymore, c’mon!

They also have their own blog, as does everyone seemingly; http://www.myspace.com/girltalk/blog. The blog is riddled with a whole heap of praise from fans about their work.

“Everyone was singing and dancing by then… The crowd was completely into the song. They even got quiet when Girl Talk said so, then louder again”- a quote from a fan of Girl Talk.

Exhibit A of Girrrrrrrrl talk yo!

Adopt-A-Blog.

So, as required I had a look at a blog and responded to the question posed,

What do you like about it?

I chose the blog Jinky Art

This blog is visual. It’s for people who would like to have a gander at funky, quirky and different art, without having to spend your time reading a whole lot of words. This blog stood out to me for that very reason.

The blog simply begins with the line ‘If you’re a dreamer, come in, come in’. Which I just found fantastic and really interesting. The blog aims to inspire and intrigue the viewer.

It was really easy to manouver about in this blog with a simple menu including ‘movie’, ‘portfolio’, ‘details’, ‘blog’ and contact. The design of the blog was very interesting and plain which added to it’s effectiveness in showcasing this womans work as opposed to being overly flashy or over-the-top.

The photography was just beautiful. It was really happy and playful and just simply wonderful. The blog also has a song playing as you view the blog which I really liked ‘Lullaby’ by Yelke.

The detail blurb is as follows, which I liked that the blog gave a bit of background information on the photographer ‘Barb’ which gave the blog a really personal and intimate feeling.

“Her photos make for a walk down a vivid memory lane. Full and alive with color, the photographs evoke echoes of innocent laughter, the feel of hushed breeze, and the soothing, calming warmth of the sun. Not to mention, a tinge of nostalgia for the good old days of childhood.” ~ Digital Photographer Magazine Asia Pacific.

{ Photography by Barb Uil  }

Known for her whimsical heart, Barb aims to create vibrant, energetic and soulful photographic portraits.

Barb’s simultaneously true-to-life and magical work captures the very essence of childhood whimsy.  Her whimsical colours and signature compositions give you portraits that are unique and well – “JinkyArt”.

Barb is available for travel – and has extensively travelled the states,  photographing children and families as far away as New York City and as close to home as Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra & Brisbane.

Tricky, Sticky Notes.

In our tutorial, we did something a little bit different to sitting on our laptops blogging or thinking about blogging, or other numerous things (most likely simultaneous streams of audio-visual information, thanks Lev). WE PLAYED WITH STICKY NOTES.

This proved to be a useful exercise in coming up with ideas for our groups hypertext essays.

We were able to come up with a few ideas. This is a picture of Absolute Lev. We felt that Vodka was a valuable representation of Lev, the man was from Russian after all. Under the picture of vodka is a picture of Lev as a polar bear (not that Russia is really there place of origin, and he kind of looks like a badger.. Erin, you are a lovely artist).

So we had the brilliant light bulb of an idea to incorporate an interactive ‘Was Lev Right?’ element to the hypertext essay- where the reader can decide if they agree or disagree with an idea that Lev Manovich has come up with and correspondingly go to a new question with a a brief paragraph/image/thought about the question being asked.

This is thus staying true to the concept of hypertext essays. It is not linear. There is no specific starting point. There is a circular element to drive yourself around the hypertext essay. Plus, it allows the reader to decide a different reading and thus understanding of the  hypertext essay every time they access it and a balanced or not so balanced perception of the theories raised by our group in analysis of the Lev Manovich extract on The Language of New Media.
