Le Script

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

In most cases a film is a script idea made into filmic reality. I think it is one of the most quintessential part of filmmaking. In most cases we can’t make a film by having no script. I mean we can entirely make a film without a script but it would be hard to do a film with narrative elements without having a narrative in the first place. A script evolves from an idea that has been fleshed out.   From what I understand, a script could be one of the most important factors in deciding whether a film will suck, or will be totally awesome. If the screenwriter puts too much or too little information in a script and the director brings everything to life on screen, it will be definitely shown on screen.

If I can’t do justice to my story idea, I’ll try to do justice to other people’s ideas!

Film TV1 – Story Idea

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

The trio of John, Johnny and Jonathan heads over to Paramount Studio, Hollywood in response to an open call audition. During their audition, they drive the director crazy by forgetting the script and improvising with their own lines. However, the studio boss likes their natural comedic talent and tells the director that the trio are to be signed on for an oncoming film.

Do Show, Never Tell.

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

In this week’s lecture, Christine talks about Showing and not telling. If a character in a film tells us what’s going on in his/her mind, it would potentially be boring. It’s better to show things/actions that the actor does that gives us clues about how a character is feeling. It’s more believable and interesting than telling.

An example that came to mind is character introductions at the start of Little Miss Sushine (2002). I find Olive’s (Abigail Breslin) introduction in the film a good example of “show, don’t tell”. Olive could have just told the audiences that she dreams of becoming a beauty pageant queen. Instead of the film doing this, the film introduces her by having a shot of her watching a video of a beauty pageant. The winner is crowned. Then Olive rewinds the tape and pauses. She mimics the winner’s pose and expression. From that we know she wants to be a beauty pageant queen.

Hopefully I could actually do more of showing than telling in the short film that I’m going to do in the course.

Film TV 1 Week 1 Tute

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

First First TV1 tute for the semester. Robin just basically states that this course is about thinking up of films and making them! Collaboratively nonetheless.

Sounds rather simple but I think this course will be quite challenging. This is totally a new territory for me. I’ve never actually filmed anything with a form in my life and this is like jumping off a cliff and into the sea. In addition I’ve never actually kept a blog; apart from a photo blog. But I’ve never had the habit of writing consistently in any form of journal or blog. So blogging would be a challenging part for me as well.

We are told that our blogs are meant for reflections of what we’ve learned in the course and whatever pertains to film making in the loosest form. Not only talk about what, but also why. I’ll try to reflect as much as possible.  In addition to that, maybe I’ll use this blog as a collection of useful notes that I picked up from lectures and tutes.

Outer experiences will help articulate in making actual films. For example my interest in photography might actual come in handy in being a DOP. So I’ll try to branch out and experience the world as much as I can and hopefully these experiences could make me a better filmmaker.

  • Enable us from taking a step back – objective perspective on the internet, beyond stereotypes
  • Links are how information becomes knowledge.
  • Information is new Knowledge
  • Quality of work (rubbish on the Internet), sketch videos, likely forward what’s the best. ->
  • What is quality? (Different kinds of quality is present)
  • Gain knowledge from doing, good ideas happened from ‘’Doing It”
  • Knowledge is not as precious -> quality drops (in order to counter that, we have to filter content on the web).
  • There’s a personal choice of what you want your quality of knowledge to be.
  • Reading chosen because it’s helpful as a whole
