IM1 week 10 meeting

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

We met up today to basically think up of a new proposition for our K-film. We had trouble thinking of new propositions and ideas for our K-film.

Initially we thought of taking a word our from our proposition which is “Life is learning, living and loving”. We thought of taking out the “living” part as we thought it was too broad. We needed to have some kind of tighter focus for our project. Although in the end we decided that subtracting ‘living’ from our proposition isn’t enough.

So we had to rethink our entire proposition framework.

After much thinking, we are going with “Life is a Crime”.

We’re planning to go for a non-serious take on Crime or things that we deem to be somewhat criminal. Of course it will be only an act and we’ll state the disclaimer and such. We’re planning to show some of our videos to Seth with this new proposition.

IM1 Group meeting week 9

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

We decided to meet up today to refine our ideas for our group K-Film Assignment and to prepare ourselves for the chance of us getting that bonus 5% marks for next week’s mini critique.

As of now we decided on going with the proposition of “Life is learning, living and loving”. (cheesyyyy)

Some points discussed in the meeting are:

  • what to present as prototype for critique in week 10 and hopefully receive a 5% bonus for the prototype. (Needs to contain a minimum of 15 clips and have 2 interfaces)
  • Discussed about what is needed in the production portfolio submission of the project (Meeting notes and minutes in which we have to have a minimum of one meeting each week until submission. PDF!!)
  • Gantt chart needs to be backlogged all the way to Week 7
  • Outline our task allocations within our group based on our strengths and weaknesses.
  • Set the specifications of our videos and videos thumbnails.

IM1 Lab Week 9

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

Well, today’s Lab was fruitful. Everyone from my group came up with 3 videos each with regards to the propositions ideas that we are toying with.

What we did as a group:

  • We completed our Gantt chart (allocated the appropriate amount of time needed to do tasks)
  • Take minutes for today’s in class meeting.
  • We took a look at the videos we made, and we decided we need to frame the work some more.
  • We decided not to have a unifying soundtrack for our K-film as we think it might be disjointed.
  • We discussed about how to work together as a group of collaborators.  We decided to make a Facebook page for our group as most of our online discussions are going to be there.

Lab Week 7

Friday, April 13th, 2012

Korsakow Major group project,

Seth talks about the next assignment which is the Group K-film Assignment:

  • Seth suggested using google docs to do essay, basically request a certain number of words under one person; can work collaboratively.
  • Nothing wrong with doing with 3 different responses from different people with regards to the theme
  • How the lectures/readings are kind of presented, if making connections can I make with other readings and our works.
  • Worst thing is not having a starting point. Write about my working process of the K-Film
  • Choose a statement, blog about it in the next 5-6 weeks.
  • Theorising the statement
  • Need to put a statement into context before I write about it. Field of study, why Adrian chose it, and what relation does this statement/reading has  with other readings/statement.
  • We are…young, stupid, and open, awesome. (are some of the things that I might wanna do)
  • It’s good to have a certain amount of openness
  • Graph exercise: The aim was to learn what we’re good at, and what we’re not and basically play to each group members’ strengths.
  • Planning the big project. Probably think about the things that we did in the previous exercise.

We need to do 60 new Sketches, and I’m currently groupless. OMGWTHBBQ!

K-Film Essay and K-Film

Friday, April 13th, 2012

Seven weeks has passed since the start of the new academic semester and the start of Integrated Media 1. After working over seven weeks to make fifteen 30 second video sketches and make a multi-linear Autobiographical story on Korsakow using the videos, I’ve gone bonkers.

Well, not really, or rather, not yet.

But seriously, I have had my frustrations and mind-blankness with Integrated Media 1 and this thing/tool/software/thing-that-confuses-me called, Korsakow.  Maybe I’m not used to the seemingly open ended nature of this subject. Maybe it’s because I’m so used to the linearity of conventional narrative. Maybe I’m not comfortable stepping outside of my comfort zone.  Maybe the manual for Korsakow is in Russian! Nothing seems to make sense.  Alas, as the weeks passed, I start to gain a better understanding of the subject and Korsakow; especially after completing my K-Film.

We were all told not to dwell too much in thought when creating these video sketches and just do it somewhat spontaneously, and I did that for the most part. I find that thinking too much on the creative process the video sketches actual hinders my actual process of making these sketches. So as the weeks goes by, it became easier for me to make these sketches without thinking too much of it.

The theme of the K-Film assignment is “Self-Portrait”, and we’re advised by Adrian to make it into something like an autobiography of ourselves. I feel that I did this in a way I felt that best portrays my life (little itsy-bitsy things about me).

At the start, the relations that I made between these videos are of the theme for the week that the video is in (red, blue, yellow). Although after playing around with Korsakow, I feel that this wasn’t the best way of making my K-film. Almost anything is possible. I know that sounds cliché but I feel that it’s true. It’s possible make the video sketches into a work with both chaos and order/linearity.

Initially I was spamming all the words that I can think of that represents links between the videos, but that didn’t go well. It was too messy for me, so I followed Seth’s recommendation of utilising lesser keywords to link the videos. In the end I used 3 keywords to link all the different videos. They are Live, Learn, and Love. I used these words to link my videos together. I believe these words are applicable to my life, and by extension my video sketches. I live and not just exist. Majority of life is about lessons and learning new things and probably re-learning old things as well. And of course, Love.  Without it, I wouldn’t be here now.

Life is random for the most part. We could have control over certain aspects of it but random things happen in our lives. We can try to do the same things daily over and over again; we experience it differently every time. There’s always that random element to it. I might be walking down the same street everyday at the same time, but the experience is somewhat different every time. In relation to my K-film, I used the video about myself to be the starting video. This can be seen as me controlling a certain aspect of my life. For the most part the rest of the flow of the K-film is decided by the viewer. If the viewer is fortunate, the viewer would be able to watch all 15 videos, if not, the K-film ends after there are no further ‘out’ links available for the current sketch.

Life like they say is only live once. That’s why I decided only to give one life for each the videos in my K-film to show how life is only lived once. If the viewer is fortunate, the viewer would be able to watch all 15 videos, if not, the K-film ends when there are no further ‘out’ links available for the current sketch. As I’ve mentioned earlier I limited the life of each video to one and selectively adding or omitting the 3 keywords to the In and Out field of each video. So while there are choices that the viewer can make, the viewer might not get the chance to view other choices that the viewer didn’t choose at some point in the K-film.

I do believe that my work is successful. I’ve gotten over the frustration and confusion of using Korsakow as a story telling tool, also I gained a better understanding of the technicalities of Korsakow.  I adhered to the requirements for the film; I used all the videos I’ve made, I’ve use 3 thumbnails panes and subtitles for all the videos in my K-film. I believe I adhered to the theme (Self-Portrait) of the K-film through my way of seeing it. I think my K-film would give the viewers a kind of understanding of how I see my life through the whole gamut of film, text and choice (or the eventual absence of it).

PS: I can’t upload my work onto the server. Help!

Sound In Film

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

If you come to think of it, sound makes up 50% of a film, unless it’s a totally silent, silent film. The use of sound in a film could make or break a film. Sound can be a factor on whether a film could turn out mediocre, or it being brilliant. Sound can set/change the tone of the film. Sound can be used to convey certain types of emotions. Sound can try and make us feel certain emotions.

Jaws iconic film score is a great example of the usage of sound to convey suspense and drama to the film. John Williams did a really great job in composing the score. Something as simple as using only two notes to effectively create suspense, made Jaws one of the first memorable films for me. I first watched it when I was a boy and I was terrified every time the main film score came on which indicated that someone is going to be freaking mauled by the shark. :|

I’m no expert in sound, but I’ll try to source out a score that would be great for the short film which will hopefully enhance the experience of watching the future film.
