“Dead Air…”

radio

Radio art refers to the use of radio for art. “Radio Art implies that the artist who works in, and with, radio is not necessarily a trained DJ, programmer, producer, engineer, or personality, but one who uses sound to make art and seeks ways to transit it through radio as art. The act and process suggests that the radio medium can be used in an alternative way (even shaped as a material), in relation to its familiar use.”

Update on my participation goals…

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012

At the beginning of the course I set out goals regarding my participation in IM1.

Here is an update and self-reflection on how I feel I am going with the following:

5 Key Points Regarding My Participation in ‘Integrated Media’

1. Producing Videos/Photos

I greatly enjoyed producing the 3 30 second videos per week for the first half  of this course. I feel this is the most practical thing I am involved in out of all of my courses at the moment, so I tried to make the most of it, and through this learnt and discovered so much more about producing short videos, especially more abstract ones then I usually am involved with. I also loved shooting the 60 short clips for my groups Korsakow project. Together we set out and each filmed a number of relevant videos which we are now in the process of putting together in our Korsakow. Overall I feel like I have done quite well in producing videos as part of my participation criteria.

2. Unpack Stuff/Ideas

I have always found brainstorming, mind mapping, and conversation a very effective and relatively easy way of getting out all my creative thoughts and ideas. As well as working through creative ideas, conversation in particular has always been a useful way in which i can get my head around concepts which don’t fully make sense yet. I have enjoyed talking about my ideas with others, and learning to effectively brainstorm, and do so more frequently. I feel like this is something I do well, but is also something I could do more of. For this reason I will continue to focus and work on this participation requirement throughout the remainder of the course (and beyond…)

3. Essays

Essay writing has always been a personal challenge. This form of participation has (and will continue) to push me, however it is something I am hopefully improving on and will continue to put time and effort into. So far I have completed 1 essay for this course, and have another coming up very soon.

4. Research

Research is effective in every way, we are so privileged to have such efficient research utilities readily available at any time. I have found the research I have conducted so far in the course very relevant and effective, however it is probably something I should be doing more of! After all, you will only get out what you put in, and research is a significant element of the work you conduct outside of class. I aim to continue to do this, and do more of it.

5. Blog Often & With Relevance

I was relatively new to the whole blogging thing. I have found it hard to jump straight into, but I am getting there. Hopefully these blog posts have been of some interest to you. I found it discouraging that majority of the “comments” I was receiving are spam… What’s the point of writing if no one is really reading this? But it’s more than that, it’s about improving MY writing/blogging skills, for me, and if others are reading it, well then that’s a bonus.
