Week 12 A hidden art—-Film Editing

The film draft will be  submitted in this week. We finished the most of scenes editing, some transition and connection are still in discussing. When we watch a film, most of us have great difficulty in consciously perceiving the editing. Of course we know that every time there is a shift from one image to another, it is an edit, and we know that editing in general has to do with the establishing of rhythm in film. But we are often not sure of the concrete function of editing, and likewise of the contribution the editing process makes to the final film.

When filmmakers hear how theorists describe “the process of film creation,” they are often amused: it always sounds as if every step of the process is carefully planned and constructed. The filmmakers know how accidental or circumstancial filmmaking really is, to say nothing of how unaware most filmmakers are of their reasons for doing what they do, when they work. I think most film editors will recognize Dede Allen’s description of the editing process: When I start cutting a movie, I always cut with ambivalence. I have a definite intention, a definite starting point: the dramatic function of the scene;. the psychology of the characters, etc. But when I become absorbed in the material, I suddenly see all the possibilities the material contains. The unexpected. Intended and unintended possibilities. I can’t help wandering into the material. I milk the material for all the small possibilities I see in it. A look, a smile – after the director has said “cut!”, an unintentional juxtaposition of two images. Afterwards I form a general view again. But it is in the ambivalence, in the collision between the general strategy and the pleasant distractions along the way that constitutes editing as art; the true life of the film. To sum up,the role of editing in the articulation of character, performance and star image provides the focus of chapter three.

Self reflection comes from own practical editing process:

1. capture and logging: it is better start think about what kind of style gonna used in this film, then capture the same scenes and shot into one clip.

2. Although it is a group work, 2 people attend the editing is good, i think over 3 people attend, it is hard to get the idea together and waste time.

3. It is necessary to finish the image editing firstly, them there is a clearly structure for sound editing.

4. Pay attention to the editing sequences.

Anyway, i am not very satisfy with our first editing draft, because it is lack of serious consideration, it just looks time we gather broken pieces together without any sense of beauty. I believe the feedback of this draft will help and fix it up a lot.

Week 11 Reflection Shoot Day

Fortunately, we finished the film shoot smoothly on Sunday. Although it was a really struggle process, when i turned back to think about and recall it, this task provided a strong sense of achievement and pleasure. I am happy to share the process in here, and also rethink myself.

-Well done aspects:

Learn from each other: because of we shared equipments with another group, so we have to pick up the staff on Sat after they guys finished shoot firstly. By the way, we helped that group on Sat and watched their setting and preparation. It is necessary to take part in other groups’ shoot, if there are some chances, because too many effects and details were not expected in the real shoot.

Reasonable timetable: In other words, put a reasonable shot list is the priority, which assures the shot and time goes smoothly. We made a wonderful shot list and time organise, so we did everything one by one, and also it saved a lot of time to have extra discussion and thinking.

Cooperation: I realised that each role in their group has to take responsibility to their own part, do not bother someone else to help you or give you any support. On the contrary, you’d better do as much as you can do. As a result, your group work will be effective and finish it more earlier than you imagined at the start.

-Weakness and Mistakes

Please pay attention to the connection between cables and mixer box. At the beginning of recording, i did not check whether the cable’s connection is correct all the time, because i have to follow actors to move, therefore, i did not find the disconnected status, a short part of recording was no sound here.

Please make sure everybody is ready before “action”. If you are a director, do not just say standing by and rolling with yourself, it equals that you ignore the camera person, mic holding person, actors, sound person, it is a must that all of role is ready, do not miss any of them.

Please take care of the equipments and think about carefully what you guys really need in the shoot. We borrowed too many kinds lights, but we just used one of them, obviously, we wasted a lot of time to return and clean up of them.

Another important thing is MAKE SURE all of your recordings were transferred from your equipment. Because i forget copy the sound records from Mortants, but there are 20 Mortant, it is a tricky problem, i can recognise which one was i used before. So i have to download footsteps and children crying to take place.

Anyway, we finished a huge task already. Hopefully, all students are enjoy the projects like me. Now, we are going to the last step—editing!

Production Process Wek 8

Last week was the due week of our film script, we did the first time meeting after Tuesday’s lecture. We were going to engage our project gradually, all things we are going to later will be based on the script. I think all of us took a enjoyable break, it should the time back from holiday mood.

We just finished actors interview, so interesting thing. We post our ” looking for actors” on Facebook, there were 40 applicants!! We were shocked by such active guys who are so interested in acting!! However, just 8 of them came up today…Hopefully, we selected 6 people from it, at least we got 6 actors, we still 10 more….We gonna little bit crazy for this situation, but that fine, changes always runs faster than initial plans. We are think about change some places of our script to comply with reality. Moreover, actors are all volunteers, some of them are professional, some of them are acting!! If we can despite the result, the interview process was really funny and awesome. We love it.Another thing is, we are going to edit our Lenny exercise together on tomorrow. Yes,we are on the way to the final achievement, step by step.

Week 7 Film1 Lec

Filed under: Extra Information, Film 1 — admin @ 6:25 pm

Key words i quoted from Robin’s speaking and some short self thoughts:

To think about the lighting, black and white, exposure, white balance, blue scene

and also particular backgrounds

lighting and exposure are invisible, they are not like separate things

Example Video about cooperation in production process

Lenny exercise

what is lighting?

a good place, a good day,a choice to a really good location, light coming from the sun, location choice is significant, the person is right for the role

director attention

sensitive  to light

continuity of a time

electricity lighting, black card, different stops, different effects

get huge depth of field, strong contrast

key, fill, hard light source, creative shadow, distinct shadow, soft light source, reflection light, soft shadow, basic terms, direction where they are come from

exactly soft, super soft, one light source, but it surrounds.

hard sound

hard light, but it comes with soft feel

Wek 6 Film Lec

Let us make a lot efforts to the pre-production stage. Meaningful notes from Pual in this week’s lecture.

Producing/Pre-production

Personal

Crucial to a successful production, but do not necessary cast for experience, cast for an interesting, look, mannerism, etc, something other actors do not have.

Personal Collaboration

1.Pre-production 2.Shoot-military hierarchy 3.Post-equality of collaboration

Crewing for TV 1

To be able to scrap prior work if assumptions become absolute.

Security

Security is the effect by which one accidentally discovers something fortunate, especially while looking for something else entirely.

Priorities

Scheduling what do you schedule on

-scenes, set-ups,shots

-master shots or important shots first

-the other shots

-the tricky shots

-ext/int-ext first (in case it rains)

-actor availability

-location availability

On average a shoot be schedule for

-10hours

-this goes to the heart of shootability

Planning

Budget, project management scheduling of pre-production/ of shoot

Dealing with the public

-location & agreements

-Insurance

-Electricity cost

-green room

production design, make up, catering

Paperwork

the script marked up for shooting, sound, production design

Priorities

safety, camera-Tripod collapses, boxes, open toed shoes, tripping over leads, camera placement. look up, down, around.

Reputations-your’s and our’s

Presence of mind-shooting in public i.e. outside of private property

Wek 5 My role & Responsibility

Interesting, my best Rachel who is from the same major with me  just asked me a couple of weeks ago”Are there any differences between Film 1 and Broadcast Media?” Yep, i had to say” It seems that there is no differences, actually” at that time, we thought we were going to study and repeat the same thing again, including made an idea and showed it as the video way….However, we were shocked by Robin, when him teach us how to use mixer box and the professional DV…!!!!!!!( I think Robin saw we were excited at that lab, and also we were could not help stopping taking photos to memory this time, i was apreciate for him did not stop us,lol). It was really improtant moment and it was a srtong push to me in the further study, when i saw such profesional equipments, which will go company with me in the future, in my media career. I showed the photos to my firends and my family members, they are expected for what i will learn. Yes, i know we will become professional gradually, we are on the road. Resume the thread of my discourse, my role is the sound person in thi s project, in comparison with last semester, it is more complicated, it is not only record the sound, but also try to get the good quality of sound, it depends on whether i can operate the mixer box correctly. Now, i am still a little bit confused about each bottoms’ function, but i will be acquainted with it from each practise.

Wek 4 Lec

Important notes which i took from this lecture, bacause we are going to engage our film shoot from this week, it is useful for me to review and consider these tips again before the informal shot.

The script is analysed for:

1.colour

2.Frame

3.Angle

4. Viewpoint: Objective viewpoint, Subjective Viewpoint, Point of view

5: Area fo shot

6: Movement

7: Focal Lenght

8: Depth of field

Storyboard

Storyboard part:

1. floor plan first 2: the order of storyboard pictures (1,2,3….)

To think about following actions:

middle shot to wide shot, wide shot, close up, track back, walkin, come up, track forward, walk into, camera sits up..and so on

what are the differences between different angles? what are the different visual effects? How to make the film tells a story smoothly? Too many questions are existing in  my mind…

Fred’s mind is filled up with all romantic ideas at this time,he lying alone on the bed with a half naked body. He hums the opening bars of his favourite tune to clam down himself. He is waiting, waiting for the woman removing her face in the bathroom. There is a totally different face appearing in the mirror, there is a pair of bloodshot eyes looking at the mirror. The light of bathroom turns off, the door is opening. Fred has already dazed with sleep, he wakes up and sees the red figure of a person without shoes is coming up himself. Suddenly, fred gives a shout of surprise and then Fred was throttled off ; his huge , pink tongue hanging half a foot out of his mouth , and his pendent lips streaming with bloody slave, he could not breath anymore, he was in a trance, seeing the figure clearly at the last second, it was his fiancee’s father. Fred killed his fiancee several weeks ago…..
