Did you know social media is now a powerful weapon for businesses? Following up from the reading we did in week 3 on collaboration. I wanted to dive deeper into the topic to learn more about how social media sites like Facebook and Twitter are so widely used by governments, businesses and entrepreneurs and why. So here is what I found. These days, you can find a large variety of companies and organisations on sites like: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google+, Reddit, LinkedIn, StumbleUpon, Tumblr, Ning, [...]

This week’s lecture was pretty interesting. It was the first time we actually had a Skype lecture! Our guest speaker for today was Jonathan Hutchinson. As his blog’s ‘about page’ states, Jonathon Hutchinson is a community manager for ABC Pool, the user-generated content site for the ABC. This position forms a component of his PhD research investigating the challenges and opportunities by incorporating UGC and its communities into the publishing practices of the ABC. (Untitled, by linh.ngah) How do you find the latest fashion trends? When was the last time you bought a fashion magazine to find out what was the in look? Yeah, you know what I’m talking about) and our cell phones to keep in touch with each other. Text [...]

Tweet in less than 140 characters, What is Twitter? One word: Microblogging. And what is microblogging? Well, as Wikipedia puts it: A microblog differs from a traditional blog in that its content is typically smaller in both actual and aggregate file size. Microblogs “allow users to exchange small elements of content such as short sentences, individual images, or video links That is exactly what Twitter is all about! The exchange of small elements such as ‘short sentences, individual images or video links’. [...]

Today, while I was Facebook-ing (as usual), I realised that through Facebook, people are able to find you online. I know what you might be thinking, “Oh, my gawd. Is she for real?” Well, hear me out. I realised Facebook and all other social websites are linked up in Google. If you try Google-ing yourself in Google image, you might be able to find images of yourself in there. The more images or information or friends you have, the more [...]
