PP2 AKTA// FINAL SUMMARY

October 17th, 2011 by admin

FINALBLOG.

PART A: Project Work.

Contribution within specific designated production roles(s) for each component: 17/20

RADIO

Radio Broadcasting was an ongoing process of researching material, getting ideas for radio shows and sourcing content which was quite time consuming but as I did that,  I got to know and become more informed more about the exhibition as a whole which made the process beneficial for me. The experience of being on the radio although a bit separated from everything, definitely grew on me and became incrementally more fun as we got into certain formats, got into structuring our shows a certain way and generally becoming more comfortable on the radio. I particularly liked them-ing my show, and sourcing content from all over to make it work and I was relatively proud of that effort.

DOCUMENTING

Documenting on my part was fairly technical and check-listing as we were allocated certain slots to document. Each Thursday, our slot, let us experience all aspects of the “academy” ; the sessions and the lectures which was again beneficial in understanding more about the exhibition. That said, it wasn’t the most fun, quite tiring in terms of following around and the patience of collecting the information and then merely transferring it without really interacting with it.

ANCILLARY

This is where we focused our energies. We gave a lot of thought and effort into our final ancillary videos. Within each video there are multiple references, locations props and time invested to get both our idea and what we thought would represent the AKTA exhibition adequately, across.  From our radio shows through to the videos we did always try to make our content AKTA applicable and strived to really refernce as many aspects of the AKTA experience as possible and I think that’s reflected in our work and I’m pretty happy with the end results.

Contribution to effective overall organization of process: 15/20

TIME MANAGEMENT AND SCHEDULING

Time Management in my case can forever be improved. We did invest time in scheduling as a group and did have benchmark times as we realized we would not always stick right to our initial game plan. That said we got everything done, but it would have definitely been easier and also more economic and maybe we would have even been able to produce more works had we been on a stricter time line.

ESTABLISHING AND MEETING DEADLINES.

I did make concerted efforts to create deadlines and plans as I do have a penchant for lists and such, however we did not always meet them. This was not too much of a problem as we always got the work done so although not following to the tee our initial plan ,we did “reference” it if you like and followed it out,  just not exactly in the time plan that would have been ideal.

GROUP COLLABORATIVE PROCESS

Aaron, Ryan , Diane and I were a group in all aspects of the exhibition production process and this for us worked well. We have an odd dynamic but when focused makes sure that we get things done. With the production of our ancillary content, in which we cared about the most, we did put hours of preparation before during and after, right from the ideas process to getting it edited, (as a group) and think this was one of the strengths of the whole process.

Overall effort and time contributed: 18/20

TOTAL 48/60

PART II: INDIVIDUAL LEARNING

Participation, attendance and contribution in classes: 19/20

I attended I am sure, near all the classes as I felt they were key to keeping on track and making sure the work we were doing was relevant and did not go astray in terms of how relevant it was for the whole exhibition. And as far as structure of the exhibition and class work not being as regimented it was ultimately beneficial that I was present every week. It also gave me new ideas and inspiration for content to source in the radio station shows and also in creating the ancillary content.

Work in secondary roles on other projects in class. 13/20

This was not a huge contribution to others. Ryan, Aaron and I did film and talk to some members of the other mis-design exhibition (McDonalds) and shoot some footage for Sheryl.  But other than that, since we were working as a group and having near 4 shows a week on the radio as well as documenting and preparation for ancillary content this left not much time for more work.

TOTAL:  30 /40

GRAND TOTAL:  82/100

PP2 AKTA// DOCUMENTATION in retrospect

BLOG.
DOCUMENTATION

We supported the documentation process by taking over the Thursday spot. We were present for the lectures that went on during the exhibitoon , they were more than interesting and vaired. May be not always interesting as some were on bizarre topics of little interest to me. However they were handy in being useful for content for our radio shows.

The lectures were then followed by a private session run by Adam and then by Art. These always provided us with great footage and insight into how this aspect of the exhibition ran. Also to gtet a glimpse into Adam Kalkin, the character. He did some fairly interesting things.Logistically we all took turns carrying the camera/ sound for the sessions, which proved to be quite hectic sometimes, Adam liked to either run around a lot or stay very still for a long time. Both proving to be quite uncomfortable with a camera on your shoulder.

The gallery staff, depending who was on the front desk were fairly helpful. They’re a fairly conservative, rule aware, quiet lot. “no eating/no drinking/ no running/where are your shoes/no eating/ no drinking/ what is that/ that may not be allowed” kinda lot. Which was new. and also just generally interesting going head to head with Mr.Adam-Theres-no-rule-that-can-stop-me-Kalkin. It is interesting to note how difficult institutions can be. I think we can all take a note out of Grace McQuilten’s book and how she navigates to get what she wants, whilst also appeasing the Mr> Kalkin as well as persons involved at the Ian Potter Gallery. I would not particularly ever want her job under these partcular circumstances but i definitely applaud her ability to get shit done.

We also got to get an insight intothe othe exhibitions as part of hteMis Design exhibition. PArticularly the McDonalds one. I spoke to the , attained some footage and all in all it was an isght. I wasnt privy to the womans weaving circle though, but Sheryls footage was great!.

PP2 AKTA// RADIO TOWER in retrospect

October 17th, 2011 by admin

Pop-Up radio in the AKTA Radio Tower has been an experience. CEtain aspects to discuss, easier done in dotpoint form so lets begin.

One of the best things about the tower was finding the content, coz as we went searching and got more familiar with all the texts Adam had suggested as well as finding our own, the whole concept of the exhibition started to make more sense. Made it a bit more concrete. I tried in my particular show to stick to one theme, influenced by Adam himself, a big part of the exhibition, David Foster Wallace’s texts and
ti was on hiphop and that sub- culture- the radio show is up on the website.

The experience of being in the tower itself was the other part of it. The tower was. Intersing.    Dealing with the cold/heat/rain/electricity was interesting but after a while it felt like our own little cubby house and i grew to love the damned thing. It truly did make it feel like a pirate radio station. As far as OH&S goes. I wonder where on the scale of holy unsafe to am I going to die it was on but I liked it. Little bit of pirateness in tower form for sure.-

A running joke was “if you’re listening to us give us a call on 0401800889 – This is Aarons number give him a ring and tell him you loved him on Pirate Radio and would he available for personal serenading sessions ) Alas, we got not responses which lead us to be slightly less enthused but also a little bit more personable and easy with out the pressure of “Everybody listening” . Althought I don’t think this was a major factor, it just felt like us being us in a room, which felt quite safe and comfortable. Plus we (diane, Aaron, Ryna and myself) aren’t exactly the mosst UNforthcomign lot. You may have noticed if you listened to us on 96.9FM PIRATE RADIO.

All in all , an experience that grew on me, an aspect of this studio that i felt was really different and a feature as well as one that informed me about the exhibition’s concept.

PP2 AKTA// ANCILLARY CONTENT – W.I.P.POST

October 17th, 2011 by admin

This aspect of the AKTA gallery is where the greatest contribution was made in our eyes. Also the most enjoyable. We produced two videos. Intentionally with the  the aim of three . Here’s a little break down that we pre-wrote. An aim of what we wanted to do that we wrote up fairly early in our production process…

PRODUCTION PROJECT 2
ADAM KALKIN TENNIS ACADEMY/ RADIO TOWER

Efforts & Contributions towards project by;
Aaron Hartley. Ryan Gasparini. Diane Vu . Aysha Zackariya

As a group we’ve chosen to tailor our projects to one specific aim and that is to create a cohesive arrangement of materials that sync up with Adam Kalkin’s idea that subversive tactics do much more than a mallet to the head. And so in the spirit of seeing ourselves as part of the exhibitions concept, that we are indeed a subterfuge tactic; we chose act in the same that the exhibition does. Endeavoring to mess with the viewers idea of what they think they are engaged with, and to question the validity of what they are interacting with by bringing the initial concept and alternative reality of the the Adam Kalkin’s tennis academy into the real world with the creation of multimedia content.

As we approached our project in this way we looked at suggested materials that Adam had incorporated into his own research of the exhibition/Academy but also some that spoke particularly to us and will be represented and reminiscent of in the works we produced.

-   Infinite jest , (novel) by David Foster Wallace
-   Borat , (film) by Sacha Baron Cohen
-   Beastie Boys (music), Alb: Hot Sauce Connection Pt.2
-   Old School HipHop influences; Notorious BIG, Wu Tang etc. The Wackness, (2008)
-   Troubled/Crazy Characters; Dan in real life (film, 2009), Borat, The wackness(film, 2008)
-   Pirate Radio , The Boat That Rocked, Queens of the Stone Age, Songs for the Deaf (200)

These are list of the works we’ve produced;
1.  AKTA TV SHOW ADVERT/IMAGERY
2.  AKTA FOOD.
3.  AKTA FOOD AD/IMAGERY
4.  SPONSORSHIP VIDEO/IMAGERY
5.  RADIO SHOWS
6.  DOCUMENTING THE EXHIBITION
7.  CHARACTER; AERIAL MOLE — Create an online presence for AERIAL MOLE – give him an online blog or something.

AKTA TV SHOW ADVERT was made using the INFINITE JEST as inspiration, elements of BORAT, using the TV advert format to some mockery and the exhibition itself. We wanted to combine the three to create a realistic alternative world where in which one could imagine the Enfield Academy , existing alongside the AKTA Academy ; both of which could possibly exist in the real world.

Ø AKTA TV ADVERT VIDEO

The AKTA FOOD MEALS, we created for real in making Adam Kalkin’s idea of having a meal that one could incorporate into the AKTA regime. Again these were taken out of a concept and incorporated into the real world, being available for sale at the AKTA tennis academy merchandise section

Ø PICS OF MAKING OF FOOD
Ø INSERT PICTURE OF AKTA FOOD + A SIGN FOR SALE at $9 a POP.

THE AKTA FOOD TV ADS were accompaniments to the AKTA Food created and were made to promote the Food and the aspect as if incorporated into real life. The imagery that we made to go with it, (billboard ads/ tram ads) were made to further promote the AKTA meal as part of consumer culture.

Ø AKTA MEALS VIDEO
Ø IMAGERY OF AKTA MEALS BILLBOARDS/TRAM SIGNS/ POSTERS etc.

The AKTA Sponsorship endeavors; the Advert, the street imagery and the paperwork, were all efforts to further incorporate the real world into the AKTA experience. We produced a television/online ad, neccessary paperwork presenting the opportunity through which businesses could buy into the AKTA experience/exhibition.

Ø LINK TO PAPERWORK PDF
Ø IMAGERY OF PHOTOSHOPPED BILLBOARDS/TRAM SIGNS ETC
Ø SPONSORSHIP VIDEO

AERIAL MOLE, A character that was invented on a radio show that we thought embodied some of the characteristics of not only Adam Kalkin, but also characters that he drew inspiration from through his project – ,LARS ULRICKE’S POP , BORAT, characters on the Boat that rocked, and the beastie boys.Through this character we could vocalize some of the themes of the AKTA Radio and gallery and other ideas that have come up during this exhibition. We expressed it though his presence on the radio show and online blog on the website.

RADIO SHOWS
4/5? Radio shows (1 per group member) promoting the work of the AKTA exhibition, content inspiring the exhibition and our own interests.

DOCUMENTING THE EXHIBITION
4 Documenting sessions (1 per group member) of the exhibition; including sessions, interviews and lectures.

As far as keeping to these initial aims i think we’ve done well.

M!2 BlogPost: Pt.3 (Self-Assessment)

October 11th, 2011 by admin

http://ayshazack.tumblr.com/

Maria gave us a list of what needed to be done, phases and such of what needed to be worked on to get the seminar underway.I was dealt production with Aaron And Tom. We were in charge of capturing and the more technical aspects of the actual seminar day.I was in charge of making the trailers for the guest/panel members. I’ve perused all the works of the respective panel members. Loaded their trailers collected their , figured out their marketable aspects in under 3 words and made them into little trailers.

Here they are on my tumblr with their individual trailers ready for presentation;

In terms of Contribution and Collaboration I was present for all meetings that I was required to be at. Participated in the production meetings we had weekly, was there for the Matt Bates interview (more for moral support and curiouslity, but I think my presence should be noted). We were lucky enough that our seminar went quite smoothly , everyone adopted to their role quite well and things just simply got done.

In terms of Proactive Learning, and my particular seminar i learnt more in the actual seminar, listening to the panellist we’d got together, as well as from the other seminars. But as far as the learning within the subject, skills aquired adn such, it was more an exercise of production and organisation.

My Participation in class work and the production process was acceptable, attending all classes and prodcution meetings as fore stated. I also attended most, not all, of the seminars as i think this was the actual learning aspect of the class , rather than the organization of the seminar itself. I was only unable to make most of the seminars due to a clash with our PP2 responsibilities that required us to be at a radio show during that time. However, we still managed to attend the majority of seminars.

The value of the seminar series is obvious and as far as Connections & Intersections go , i think we all learnt a lot from our own seminars but also other areas that we are interested in , or do not know much about. overall , a personal ,experientail and anecdotal reocllection of an environment beats a textbook, wiki entry of what the “real” thing is like, anyday and i think that the seminars did offer us this genuine insight. The sourcing of these professionals also highlights the ability to network, to get out there and communication and contact these people who we aspire to be or want to know more about in a sector of interest. And so as far as future career development these two aspects will give us a taste of the confidence we need to see ourselves , as young professionals rather than the amateur student that we’ve been for so long/ forever.

Upon reflection I was happy with the outcome of our seminar; (blogpost). I did what was asked of me in the presentation of our seminar and i did it to a good standard, I endeavoured to partcipate as again, was required by others and from myself, in class and attendance. And so overall i award myself a High Distinction.

Thank you.

AKTA TENNIS EXCLUSIVES SHOOT DAY RECAP

September 22nd, 2011 by admin

Today we shot our video and it was good fun. Super successful i think so, and enjoyable.

We struggled to find tennis courts but luckily managed to find some nice lovely blue ones. Lucky for us as well Ryan Gaspasprinti used to play tennis so dressing him as Hal and getting him to play convincingly was easy enough. The weather was lovely as well.

Us using ourselves as characters was ultimately the best choice, we all knew how each character was coming from, and what effect we were going for overall. Also we’re not the most conventional in our methods of going about things and so we were able to work at our own pace to get it done.

It also looked qutie good, sound is good. cant complain. Now the fun of editing, which should be easy enough as we just have to follow the script :)

Easier said than done i know but very do-able.

Seminar #4: “Sell Yourself”

September 20th, 2011 by admin

On account of these being assessed accroding to the crieria sheet i shall follow that format, bit mreo regimented make sure i tick all the boxes.

Quality of Guests, Although not something that i think of straight away we al have to recognize that hte marketing factor has to coming for all so yeah in taht respect they had their guests relavent. Various comanises , of various size and stature. Correens story was a highligh. As far as Seminar Facilitation; The standards been pretty good as far seminars goes , as was this owveer some tweaking would have made it run a lot obetter. Hosting is also not an esay job, but it still ran relatively smoothly. Opportunities for audience participation, was also factored in . The groups allowing for some Q time as did the others. That said noone has gone for any kind of other methiod of audience interaction. Overall a pleasant seminar, relevant if not top on our list of knowledge to seek out about our industry, but definitely a reminder that we need to be aware of how to not justmake stuff but then get it out there as well.

Kudos to group.

IDEAS for VIDEOS for AKTA

September 19th, 2011 by admin

This is an idea i’ve come up with to be made for the AKTA EXPERIENCE.

I’ve taken a bit of inspiration from INFINITE JEST , from Tennis in general, from tv formats and from my brain.

THis is waht i’ve come up with. THe kids like it so it should be sweet to get it out once we get ourselves props and all.

TENNIS INSIDER EXCLUSIVES SCRIPT

$ponsorship Video Idea

September 17th, 2011 by admin

Proposed idea for Sponsorship that we can make to promote sponsorship for the AKTA Radio Tower. Again as forementioned our aim is to get the AKTA “project” somewhat integrated intot he “real world”. This is one of the main considerations in all the works we produce, including this one.
