Narrative
Traditional Cinema

"We can consider a narrative to be a chain of events in cause-effect relationship occurring in time and space.
Typically, a narrative begins with one situation; a series of changes occurs according to the pattern of cause and effect; finally, a new situation arises that brings about the end of the narrative." (Bordwell & Thompson 2004, p. 69)

Narrative is 'story' and therefore essential when discussing interactive cinema as it encompasses all that is important, yet possibly neglected, through interaction. This cause and effect model is what constitutes a narrative film, thus the suggestion to allow it to become a changeable and user orientated medium is quietly destroying the intended structure of any given film as the 'middle' would be entirely switched around, and viewed differently every time.
