HOW=Colour grading?

First.. What is colour grading??

Color grading or color correction is the process of modifying the colors in a movie in order to smooth non-matching cuts together in a scene, or for creative use. A stylized or gritty look can greatly enhance the emotion of a scene, depending on the movie.

PS: Well…i believe Paul already knew this, BUT, i was really shock after seeing these(that’s why i wanna share), and i start to love colour grading!

Colour Grading:

The Past:

In the olden days that is before the digital technology took over, doing a colour correction might consist of a photo chemical process applied directly to a film negative. This process was named as “colour timing”.

Most people referred to this as “color timing,” and it was done by passing red, green and blue through a photo negative and onto an “intermediate” stock. A shutter system, similar to the shutter on a camera itself, was used to control the intensity of each color and therefore allow you to “correct” a color range to the right tolerance.

  • Film grading isn’t about giving the movie an “A” or “F” but it is actually a process in which the film is colour corrected or otherwise altered for colour.
  • The colour of the scene is rather important, getting them right is one thing, but getting them wrong will enable the power of turning “day” into “night”
  • Colour can create atmosphere, “age” a scene, create emotions, etc……..

This video talks about how to colour grade, although they r not using final cut, but i think it’s worth to have a look! : )

Sanitation.Presentation.Preservation

After two days of shooting and one day of log and capturing we’ve finally come to the process of editing. Well i always thinks that it will be easier than editing a short film, but, i am so wrong about this. It is actually harder i guess, because sometimes the out come and the structure we get is not what we expected, because it is not scripted.

During the editing, we’ve spend quite some time thinking how to do the opening of the doco, and we ended up with different version (well, the best version is Paul’s idea :) ), anyway perhaps we shoud get going with the contain. It is pretty hard to combine things together, now, i  realized how important a story board is! For Doco we do not need a storyboard, that is hard because the structure will not be a fixed one.

Amazing thing in Second life.

Second life is so amazing that some might not know. In second life we can do things that we cant do in real life, this is the main thing that grows the second life. People in the virtual world is increasing, there are different things that we can do, which is unbelieveable! In the political side, there are headquaters sets up in second life, where people can interect with each other, that is also known as a “virtual campaign”. Even obama’s campaign is in second life!!

Shoot Shoot Shoot=Second Life

YES~We’ve finish shooting our second life story~ home n street~welllll~~

Let me share our steps:

first, we have to make sure our character, settings etc are perfect~~it is important to make sure everything is hiden before we hit the button “Record”.

Then we shoot from one scene to the other, from the beginning to the end. After that we shoot some different angle of the same scene, such as shooting close up, wide shoots, and we also tried out some different way of presenting. We also make use of the gesture, which enable the character to have facial expression.

The character in second life are like actual actors, they’ve to get change in different scene. In our story, we’ve got more then 3 character, therefore some of the avartar have to be change after one scene.

I reckon, everything will go smoothly if we do things in patient, without rush. Now it’s time for editings!

Second Life-In progress~

Yesterday We’ve finally got things recorded into the tape~which is good!! and the only thing we need to do now is editing!! Yeahh!!

Process:

Well……during the shooting..nothing big problems occur though..which is good~Shooting in the digitaly is actually quite different from shooting in real life, we can change the timing of the set, such as changing it to day time, mid day, night time.

Our very 1st day.

p.s: the image above are from Henrietta’s Blog

These are some images that Henrietta took during our shooting. About that day, well, ME i do not have any particular role,i just helped out Joselin on some camera movement, and setting up the light. I made a huge mistake on the lightings, by assuming that the light is bright enough with my bare eyes, it is not as bright as i think after looking at the footage, everything look so 2D, it’s horrible!!

Shooting a doco is very different from shooting a short film, while shooting a short film we can make the actors do the action or says the sentense again and again, but for an interview, everything is one shoot done, we hardly get things retake, because i suppose that’s not what we need or have to. Sometimes what we get from a doco is very unexpected, because it is not story boarded.

Well..we have more to learn. :)

Action!Creating Machinima

Readings from: Weber, Aimee, Rufer-Bach, Kimberly and Platel, Richard (2008) ‘Ch. 13. Action! Creating Machinima’, Creating your world : the official guide to advanced content creation for Second Life, (p. 318-327). Indianapolis, IN : Wiley Publishing, http://digital.lib.rmit.edu.au/ereserve/notes08/comm2243/31259008540911.pdf

In this reading, they talk about bit of pieces of how to create machinima. Machinima is the art of using video games to produce movies. Ever since the population of second world increase, people starts to do different things in the virtual world, second life is one of it. The Machinima slowly became a powerful commercial tool. In second life, it gave us oppotunity to create any kind of movie that we can imagine.

I’ve choosen some part to talk about which i think it is quite important.

1. Choosing a location and setting up.

Other then building up our settings, there are also other stuff that we have to be concern about before we hit the ‘record’ button. First of all, considering the location (if we are filming at a public location), when we film at a public place, there will often have bystanders that are not wanted, at this moment we need to use a low frame rate, so that we could fine tune the graphic details, we enable us to render the unimportant element to the lowest quality and important features are rendered at the highest quality.

To do so we could also try to reduce our draw distance. This is a video that explain what and how to use draw distance:

Before we start shooting there is also another step that we need to be conscious about, that is turning off the user interface by clicking Control+Alt+1. The resolution will have to be twice of the target resolution.

i’ve found this while doing some research..i think this website teaches alot of things. Probably it’s good to share~~ :)

WonderHowTo

Week 7- The Lights..

This week in the tute Paul discussed things about the lightings, how we should set things up..etc.. well although i didnt really get what he said but i’ve done some research.

This is a youtube that i found about lightings, this explains alot of things about lightings. I think it is quite useful.

During the tute, Paul teach us this : Camera-Interviewer-Lights

Walking in the city

Walking in the city

After reading walking in the city, i think some parts of the reading makes me think about some things that i see in the city.

they said “The city-concept is deteriorating.”

i believe it’s not only the city, perhaps, the world.

“The city is deteriorating together with the procedures that set them up.”

Like what i said in the video, human set the city, then the road, they set the car, and now, all of the thing that they set destroy the city, and the city destroy the earth.
