Jeri’s guide » About INDIA

India is one of the most beautiful and mystic Asian countries which enjoys a same gorgeous and brilliant civilization as my motherland China. When I was a teenager girl I was fascinated with the master pieces written by great Indian writer, Rabindranath Tagore who is known especially for his collection of poetry Gitanjali based on traditional Hindu themes. He won himself a Nobel Prize for literature in the 1913 and once visited to China with the company of two of my favorite Chinese writers Xu zhimo and Ling huiying. Thanks for the efforts of those Chinese translators so I could have this opportunity to read some of his great poems , such as Stray Birds, The Crescent Moon, The Gardener and Gitanjali .

Stray birds of summer come to my window to sing and fly away.
And yellow leaves of autumn, which have no songs, flutter and
fall there with a sigh
.

Someone once said poet cannot be translated but I found Tagore’s poetry was so lovely and heart-touching even though it was translated into Chinese.Yet some of the untranslatable delicacies of colour of Indian  were lost just as when the poems of Chinese Song dynasty and Tang dynasty were translated into other languages. Even today his peotry anthology are still one of my favorite books I always put beside my bed.

In my point of view, some filmmakers, especially these who made the cinema of poetry are poets in the field of film. KIM KIDuk, a Korean film director writes down the pains of helpless human beings in the lines of his cinema of poetry using his unique cinematic language. Like a poet, he manipulates laconic metaphors and symbols in his films, trying to explore and exploit the inner world of human beings. What he shows to us is poetry of desires. Film The Isle and Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring can be read as series of Kim’s cinema of poetry which share many common features in cinematic techniques.
Unlike other film director’s cinema of poetry, Kim’s films are not only about beautiful image of poetry, but are also lines with blood drop on it, which is bleeding from struggling of unrest desires. Every single soul tortured by many invisible hands which are our endless desires is showcased in his poetry-like movies.

In my hometown Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan Province, there is a Wenshu temple, which is one of the famous Buddhist temple located in this city. In first and fifteenth day of every month in Chinese Luna calendar, a lot of Chengduers worship Buddha, burn fragrance and then have a wonderful dinner in the famous vegetarian restaurants in this temple.

Szechuan dish has an international reputation for being spicy and flavorful. In these vegetarian restaurants you can also taste some of the well-known Szechuan dishes include Kung Pao Chicken, Twice Cooked Pork,Stir-fried Diced Chicken with Chilli and Peanuts, Stir-fried Bean Curd in Hot Sauce, Fish-flavored Shredded Pork, Rice Crusts and Sliced Pork, Stir-fried Sliced Beef, et. But please don’t be astonished by the menu, actually all the dishes are vegetarian food presenting in various shapes and tastes like fish, beef or pork. The basic ingredients of vegetarian cuisine here are vegetable oils, soya bean products, bamboo shoots, mushrooms, edible fungi, seaweed, vegetables, fresh and dried fruits and flowers. Numerous cooking techniques, such as stir frying, frying, stir-frying before stewing, and braising are also used in dishes as same as in traditional Szechuan dishes. As a mater of fact although many Szechuan cuisine are famous for spicy taste , large percentage of recipes that use little or no hot spices at all are often ignored by people from the other places. In the past traditional Sichuan Hot Pot was very spicy. Now people can taste hot pot with spicy, clear or milky soup. One of the best choices in cold winter days is eating milky-soup mushrooms hot pot. The soup is stewing by more than fifty kinds of different mushrooms. We may also instant boil of different mushrooms in a same pot and eat with three or four different-taste seasoning.

Oh, I can’t talk about it any more! Too tasty! I would show you to the restaurants if you were in Chengdu!                                                                                 IMGA0246.JPGIMGA0227.JPG

Internet Protocol Television: The new sibling of television

April 6th, 2006

“Contrast networked media like the internet with television: television is a masculine, paternal ‘Take –what –I-give you’ medium. (Symphonic literacy and the Feminine Touch P189, Dossier chapter 10) This is definitely the truth about a few years ago. But you should never underestimate the evolving speed of television in this digital age. IPTV is the new sibling what television family is showcasing to this new era. Different from the traditional television IPTV is a new 24-hour, 365- day and interactive kind of TV which is an outcome of network technology. It’s no doubt that sooner or later we will not wait before TV eagerly to watch the best seller of movie or live TV programs even if it’s already midnight. We could watch our favorite program whenever and where ever we want on internet.

Although IPTV is still a newly-born baby, the potential power of him has challenged greatly to the traditional television industry which supported by cable, satellite and terrestrial TV. By the help of broadband providers and utility suppliers, IPYV stand highly before the audience all over the world on the much bigger collaborative internet stage constructed by networks than where his old brother —traditional television stand.

For all of the filmmakers the network is a boundless market for them to show their works in a much cheap way. Maybe in the near future you can not tell clearly who are the real filmmakers and who are the real audience since everyone can share their films or documentaries on internet along with professional makers. I wish I could be one of these best filmmakers on this huge stage.
