Some after thoughts at 2am….

June 2nd, 2006

It’s strange that people are still showing some interest in my doco project when I have already completed it. As an act of courtesy and to show my appreciation to my participants, I posted the link for my doco on the forum on Tuesday. Now, before I posted the link, I wrote a rather lengthy post on the forum to explain why some of the profiles have not been included. My reasons were simply because I did not want to stretch the members section any further as I have already allocated 3 pages to it. To my surprise, I got another 3 profiles and requests to be featured on the site. They were just so eager to show that they are part of the community.

I was happy that they were showing some interest in my project but it also put me in a difficult position at the same time. In my mind I was going “Noooo……why are they doing this to me?!?I don’t wanna add anymore profiles. That section is already too long!” I thought about for quite awhile and in the end, I ended up expending the members section to accommodate their requests. I just didn’t know how to say no to them and it also seemed that my earlier explanation about the members section being too large was ignored. Needless to say, I soon slaved over the members section – resizing the pictures, readjusting the height and widths and do spell checks on their profiles. I worked till it was time to submit. The end result was me putting up 12 of the 17 profiles I received and to be fair to those that were not included, I turned the things they said into quotes and used them to support some of the points I made.

Anyways, I am happy with the way my project turned out. I couldn’t have done it without their participation and I truly feel that I am part of the Apocalyptica forum community now.

Here’s the link to my doco.

I am Banana

“As Asians, we have been Westernised, aren’t we?”

It’s quite hard to escape from Western influences when we are continuously exposed to Western media. Reflecting on Bo’s entry, I must that I am someone who loves Western culture and embraces it with wide open arms. As for Chinese traditions, I don’t really follow any and my family is not too fussed about it either. I was exposed to western pop culture at a very young age as my dad is an avid comic and toy collector. So it’s only natural that I grew up liking these kinds of things.

Now at the age of 22, I like comics like X-men and Sandman, play quite abit of video games during my free time, enjoys listening to western rock bands, knows more about Westerns mythologies than Chinese ones and as a child I played with Lego knights, naming my knights after King Arthur’s Knights of the Round Table. Because of all the Western things I have embraced, I have been branded a ‘banana’ (a term used to describe someone who has become highly assimilated into Western culture) by several close friends. In fact some of them even call me ‘Kwai Po’(white girl – check out Bo’s entry for more info about it) and try really hard to get me to listen to Chinese music. Would I do it just ‘fit in’ more with them? No…I am happy being a banana. I don’t give in into their demands but I do compromise by not playing any of the CD’s I have when I pick them up for an outing.

I’m just wondering to how much extent people of Chinese origin still maintain our typical Chinese greeting–’Have you eaten yet?’

Despite all the western influences that are present in my life, I still maintain the traditional Chinese greeting of ‘have you eaten yet’. When I call my mum, that is the first thing I usually ask and it’s something that comes naturally.

I present to you the 2006 winners of Eurovision – Lordi of Finland.

Lol….the forum I was following had a thread dedicated to Eurovision and to join in the fun I decided to watch a little bit of it over dinner. The Finnish band certainly did live up to all the hype it was causing!

Hi Bo,

Another good example of lack of community is the TS Frappr Map I made. I thought it would be fun for everybody to mark their location but the idea didn’t really take off.

I’ve heard of Feeder.Never really checked out their music but I may just do so in a moment based on your recommendations.Used to read NME on a weekly basis but stopped when most of the bands they recommended were Franz Ferdinand types. It’s not that I don’t like Franz but I just wanted something different after awhile. I like indie/rock music and I’m constantly on the look out for new stuff/bands to listen to. I’m currently listening to Bullet for My Valentine.

Music matters aside, I think blogs are great for promoting bands!

It’s strange isn’t it?Like you I thought it would be easy to get participants from the community that we are a part of.I’m looking at a band forum and the response to my call for participants were lukewarm.Check out my post about it here.
