As
an international myself, experiencing uncharted territory is like
an adrenaline rush if not terrifying. While exploring this new
region, other internationals like myself, have opened their minds
and eyes to other forms of culture, art and issues. Because we
have been here for so long, Australian culture or any culture for
that matter may be imbedded within us and that isn’t necessarily
a bad thing. But it does announce a problem faced by many of my
peers.
For example, when Adam mentioned that he had a preference
for beer and wine; something that he picked up from Australian culture, he
had trouble fitting in back in his home country, where his peers would ‘open bottles’ while
clubbing and get drunk whilst he stands in a corner with a glass of wine
or a bottle of beer. Or when Sue mentions that her dance performances
are interpreted or seen in different ways due to the influences of
culture. She explained further after the interview, that when it
comes to cases like these; she has to tread more carefully when it
comes to issues like costumes or certain movements when dancing.
For example, her friend cooing about a miniscule issue announced
to her that all thoughts of her performance prior to the finale were
washed out.
